Situation
Active Environmental Services, Inc. was contracted to conduct the remediation activities associated with the Emergency Response Spill Recovery after a contractor overfilled an Above Ground Storage Tank (AST) containing Caustic Soda (NaOH).
Remediation Activities
The site required a 30% concentrate Hydrochloric acid solution to neutralize/stabilize the Caustic Soda material located in the secondary containment tank. The Hydrochloric acid was transferred into the secondary containment area and mixed with the Caustic Soda in 30-minute intervals to avoid a violent reaction with the Caustic Soda and the secondary containment tank. When the spill material achieved a neutral pH reading, the material was transferred into sealed 25-gallon poly tanks for disposal at the proper facility. The solid and liquid materials produced from the cleanup/recovery process were also transferred into sealed 25-gallon poly tanks for disposal at a proper disposal facility.
