Cultural Resource Management (CRM) and Section 106 Consultation Services

 

Cultural Resource Management (CRM) involves the identification, documentation, delineation and evaluation of properties that are important to the history of a region.  Active Environmental Services, Inc. (Active Environmental) provides a full range of CRM services to our clients enabling them to comply with State and Federal cultural resource regulations.  Active Environmental, including its subcontractors, is capable of providing a full range of cultural resource services including archaeological, architectural and historical preservation services. 

 

Our professionals use our excellent reputation with State Historic Preservation Officers (SHPO), Tribal Historic Preservation Officers (THPO) and/or Native American Nation representatives to determine the best procedures for effective compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966 and various state cultural preservation laws.  We also use the most modern technological methods, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), and Electromagnetic technology (EM), in order to streamline the process of efficiently identifying and evaluating cultural properties.  Our excellent reputation with SHPO coupled with efficient field and laboratory techniques, allows our team of professionals to complete projects in a timely and professional manner and on budget.

Active Environmental’s personnel are currently listed on Indiana’s List of Approved Archaeological Contractors, and have experience in the completion of Section 106 documentation in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan and Illinois.  This includes more than 300 archaeological surveys and over 50 archaeological investigations (subsurface investigations and archaeological testing projects).

Archaeological Site identified during a Phase Ia Reconnaissance for a Proposed Riverwalk in the Town of Madison, Indiana. The 1890 Photograph of the Madison Riverfront better illustrated the site boundaries and allowed the project to continue without further investigations or delays.
